Strictly Come Dancing's Vincent Simone, Flavia Cacace Prove Partnership Still Strong On Midnight Tango Tour
July 5, 2011 at 6:11 PM

When Vincent Simone pulls Flavia Cacace into his arms, flings her from him across the dance floor and finally draws her close once more, audiences could be forgiven for thinking they are witnessing a real-life love affair. Their history, inevitably, is far more complicated.

The lives of this glamorous pair have been intertwined since they started dancing as teenagers, but the spotlight was focussed on their personal partnership when they joined the professional line-up of Strictly Come Dancing in 2007. The following year brought romantic upheaval when Flavia fell for her celebrity partner Matt Di Angelo, while Vincent bewailed his very public cuckolding from the red-tops.

And That's When the Trees Attacked...
July 5, 2011 at 6:11 PM

Weather has rapidly become more dangerous across the globe, likely the result of planet-wide human-caused climate change, according to scientific consensus. But the notion of Mother Earth rising up against her human inhabitants is not merely a global one, it strikes on the local level as well.

I've been without power for the last few days, and much of my hometown of Kenosha, WI, lies in shambles. The trees struck, and they struck hard and fast.

Roberto Nelson, Oregon State Basketball Player, Shatters Backboard At European Tour (VIDEO)
July 5, 2011 at 6:11 PM

Some players bleed hoops. And some players bleed because of hoops. While we're not sure if Oregon State guard Roberto Nelson falls into the former camp, we're quite certain he qualifies for the latter after watching the video above.

While on a tour of Macedonia, Nelson and a few of his fellow Beavers put on a dunking display at a local gym. Nelson apparently threw down with a touch too much gusto, however, and shattered the backboard. Beyond simple damage to the gym's facilities, however, Nelson emerged from the accident badly cut on his face, as seen in the graphic video above.

It's David Duke's Turn To Get Presidential Speculation, Apparently
July 5, 2011 at 6:10 PM

Poll after poll indicates that GOP voters are not particularly happy with the field of candidates that are vying for the 2012 GOP nomination. But how would they feel if white supremacist David Duke jumped into the race? Well, since polls also put a high premium on electability, I'm guessing they'd feel even more dispirited about it. But we'll have to see if anything comes of the news today that Duke is mulling getting into the presidential fray, as Eve Conant reports for The Daily Beast.

Add to the growing list of candidates considering a bid for the GOP presidential nomination in 2012 America's most famous white-power advocate: David Duke.

Eataly To Open DC, LA Locations As Early As 2012
July 5, 2011 at 6:10 PM

Eataly is big. The 40,000-square-foot Italian food-and-drink emporium already comprises a wine store, a beer garden, a bakery, a grocery store and six restaurants, all on 23rd Street in Manhattan. Eataly is so big that Little Italy's merchants have been complaining that it's stealing business from Mulberry Street. But by the end of 2012, if all goes according to plan, it will get bigger.

That's when Joe Bastianich says he and Eataly's co-owners (who include superstar chef Mario Batali) hope to have opened their second of three American branches of Eataly they currently have planned—in Los Angeles and Washington, DC.

The Most Controversial U.S. Court Trials
July 5, 2011 at 5:15 PM

Innocent until proven guilty, that's the legal right of any person standing trail in the United States, no matter how sensational the case may be, or how high profile the people involved. But what happens when the outcome that seems so blindingly obvious to the public does not stand in court?

These 11 court cases prove that regardless of who is on trial or how conclusive the evidence may seem, no one is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt until the jury says so.

On the Perils of Diarywriting; Lessons Learned; and The Opportunities of New Media
July 5, 2011 at 5:15 PM

I sometimes feel like I am living in several different time zones simultaneously, all in the same country, often at the same desk.

There is the here and now, always the most pressing, often the most challenging, especially if you have something of an up and down mental state (certificates to prove), and a book out dredging up the past again. There is the place where the present meets the future, and as a diarist, and one now committed to what one reviewer called a 'publishing juggernaut', that is a place I have grown to know well. What I write in my diary at night gets published some years down the track, in a different context for different times. The raw and immediate can sometimes look a bit odd when even the author has forgotten all about it.

On Poor Air Quality, We Face 'Perfect Storm' in 2012 - Or Do We?
July 5, 2011 at 5:15 PM

Last Wednesday at the View Tube, an arts and community center in East London within clear view of the nascent 2012 Olympic site, the artist Faisal Abdu'Allah launched a two-week film exhibition on breathing.

In collaboration with three Olympic athletes and scientists from King's College and Brunel University, the 9-minute, 58-second film titled "Double Pendulum" - its duration cleverly designed to match the current 100-meter sprint record set by Usain Bolt in 2009 - nominally "examines the journey that air takes through the human form."

Atlanta Public Schools Shaken By Cheating Report [VIDEO]
July 5, 2011 at 4:50 PM

NEW YORK -- Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal announced Tuesday that widespread cheating inflated Atlanta Public Schools' 2009 state standardized tests scores.

The product of a two-year investigation, the report concluded that systematic cheating occurred within Atlanta Public Schools -- which had been lauded for its quick testing gains -- including at least 44 of the 56 examined schools. The report implicated 38 principals, noting that 178 educators pled the Fifth Amendment when questioned. Eighty-two other educators confessed to various forms of cheating, including erasing wrong answers on students' multiple choice exams and then replacing them with the correct ones.

Fatima Ghazali, Sudanese Journalist, Jailed For Reporting On Activist's Alleged Rape
July 5, 2011 at 4:36 PM

One of five Sudanese journalists on trial for publishing articles related to the alleged rape of a female activist was jailed for a month on Tuesday.

As the AFP is reporting, Fatima Ghazali -- a reporter at the Sudanese daily Al-Jarida -- was handed a month sentence for writing about Safiya Ishaq, a youth activist who claimed in videos posted online that she was raped repeatedly by three security officers after her arrest in Khartoum in February. A judge convicted Ghazali of publishing lies and ordered her to pay a fine of 2,000 Sudanese pounds ($625) or spend a month in prison, lawyer Hassan Abdullah al-Hussein told AFP.

Abortion Tactics and Conflicted Moral Ambivalence
July 5, 2011 at 4:30 PM

Both sides on the "life issues" remain totally invested in being morally "right." The purists on both sides also refuse to admit that most Americans (if public opinion polls are to be believed) occupy a -- sensibly conflicted -- middle ground on "the issue."

Abortion must be legal because women have a need to determine their individual futures, because many women find themselves pregnant without the support of a loving community and in horrible circumstances, because women have been picked on and kicked around throughout history as a result of religious beliefs related to "family values" that turn out to be anything but.

I tried yoga about a decade ago (and yes, I am now old enough to be able to toss around phrases like "a decade ago") -- and I hated it.

In short, yoga was this thing that I tried, didn't like and moved on from.

Addressing Diabetes Care in the Home
July 5, 2011 at 4:20 PM

When people think of caregiving, they envision a middle-aged woman providing loving care for her elderly mother who lives in a nursing home. In reality, a caregiver can be a relatively youthful spouse whose husband or wife has a chronic condition -- such as diabetes -- that requires daily monitoring.

Diabetes is a condition in adults and children that occurs when the body cannot properly convert glucose (sugar) into energy. According to the American Diabetes Association, approximately 26 million adults and children in the United States are living with diabetes, and another 79 million people have pre-diabetes (a condition that increases their risk for developing Type 2 diabetes).

The Search for the Historical Paul: Which Letters Did He Really Write?
July 5, 2011 at 4:20 PM

The 13th-century Sopoćani monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site near the source of the Raška River, just east of Novi Pazar in the south-western corner of Serbia. After two centuries of attack, desolation and abandonment, its Church of the Holy Trinity is now rebuilt, its frescoes restored and its monastic life revived.

In the southern choir of that eastward-pointing church are frescoes of seven apostles. Five are now unidentifiable, as time and decay has literally defaced them, but each is folding a single scroll. Matthew is identifiable and he is holding the book of his Gospel. But the most clearly identifiable is the leading figure on the choir's east wall. It is the apostle Paul, complete with his recognizable receding hairline. His right hand is raised in the traditional Byzantine teaching gesture of fingers separated into two (for two natures in Christ) and three (for three Persons in the Trinity). What is extraordinary, however, is that his left hand holds 10 clearly distinguishable scrolls -- not a single scroll or book but 10 scrolls in a cluster.

On a recent trip to a national park in North Sulawesi, Indonesia, photographer David Slater left his camera unattended for a moment and a female crested black macaque monkey snatched it to snap some self-portraits.

It seems she was so fascinated by her own reflection in the lens that she didn't notice she was inadvertently taking self-portraits while gazing at herself. The result is a series of photos that are oddly posed exactly like the profile pictures of a 15 year old Facebook fashionista.

What My Kids' Summer Jobs Taught Me About the Job Market
July 5, 2011 at 3:58 PM

My kids are not very smart. Really.

They're all in high school, and they get decent grades. And, OK, they're pretty good kids. But a few weeks ago my oldest son filled our Toyota Corolla's tank with diesel. My other son, a few years ago, thought it would be a fun prank to throw eggs at a car and chose our next door neighbor's Honda instead of someone much farther away. My daughter made out with her first boyfriend on our street not 100 yards away from my office window. In broad daylight. While I watched in astonishment. These are not people who will one day rule the world, and for that we can all be thankful.

Combatting the Stigma of Self-Publishing
July 5, 2011 at 3:45 PM

I've been keeping quiet about the fact that I published my first novel without the aid of a publishing house. I've received a whole bunch of stellar reviews (including this one from a fellow Huffington Poster) and it really hasn't been an issue. There's a publishing company listed on the spine of the book and that seems to be good enough for most people. Partially, I blame that on the fact that I paid an incredibly talented artist and designer to put together the covers and they don't look like your average self-published fare.

Some people are pleasantly surprised by the fact that I took on the job of publisher as well as writer and don't seem to have any trouble accepting it. It doesn't take a genius to see that the traditional publishing model offers very few advantages to readers or writers in this day and age. Aside from shelf-space for a new release and reviews in slightly larger publications, I can do just about everything they can do and more.

Vacuum Cat Cleans Up His Act (VIDEO)

After a long holiday weekend chowing on too much barbecue and staying out late at the local pub with his old friends from home, this little cat decided to mix business with pleasure. Not only is he getting a good rub down, which felines go bonkers for, by the way, he's also cleaning all the hot sauce, draft beer and red, white and blue confetti out of his silken hair.

At least that's what we'd like to imagine he's doing. In reality, he's a cat, so he's probably just really enjoying the petting sensations courtesy of the vacuum hose. But we can dream, can't we?

Nat Borchers, Real Salt Lake Defender, Gets Arguably Worst Red Card In MLS History (VIDEO)

The refereees in Major League Soccer have come under fire with great regularity this season. From refs getting suckered by players taking dives to them sending star players off the pitch for no apparent reason, the league has seen its season disrupted by an alarmingly high number of bad calls.

That trend continued on Monday night during the New England Revolution's visit to Real Salt Lake. Just three minutes into the match, RSL defender Nat Borchers made what appeared to be a great defensive play during a Benny Feilhaber breakaway by catching Feilhaber from behind and kicking the ball off of his face and out of bounds.

Forty-two years later, as I marched down Christopher Street passing the Stonewall Inn during the annual pride parade, I was met by an entirely different atmosphere, one of celebration and gratitude.

Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul is calling for the elimination of the Transportation Security Administration and recommending that the agency be replaced with "real privatization of security."

"The press reports are horrifying," writes the Texas congressman in an op-ed published online by The Hill. "Children molested; disabled people abused; men and women subjected to unwarranted groping and touching of their most private areas; involuntary radiation exposure. If the perpetrators were a gang of criminals, their headquarters would be raided by SWAT teams and armed federal agents. Unfortunately, in this case the perpetrators are armed federal agents. Are Google, Facebook, and Twitter Taking Social Backwards
July 5, 2011 at 2:08 PM

In the late 1990s, the Web was a portal world. Web portal players like AOL, Lycos, Excite, MSN, and Yahoo! built islands of information and fought like hell to keep users with services like email and "exclusive content." Everything was about acquiring and keeping eyeballs and stock market valuations were priced accordingly. At the time I was in the business of supplying news content to the portals and it had the air of a Turkish bazaar as content feeds were bought and sold like a commodity.

As the portals fought with each other, consumers were left out of the discussion. So while the analysts talked up the merits of this portal vs. that as if that's all there was, a little search engine called Google figured out a better way to organize information on the Web.

July 5, 2011 at 2:08 PM

JK, I'll even help you out a little so you can hit the ground running with this one. According to the sorting hat in my head, here's where you can expect to see all of our favorite HP characters heading off to earn their degrees.
