Barcelona's Prostitution Problem: Catalonian City Becoming Human Trafficking Epicenter (VIDEO)
July 5, 2011 at 1:46 PM

Barcelona may be beloved the world over for its sun-drenched beaches and spectacular nightlife, but the city has also become a notorious epicenter for the local prostitution trade.

As CNN is reporting, Barcelona's tourism trade isn't the main draw for human traffickers, although the sex worker industry undoubtedly benefits because of it. Not only can vacationers become a great source of clients, but tourist visas are used to draw potential prostitutes from Bulgaria, Albania, Nigeria and elsewhere. Many women are drawn to Barcelona to become prostitutes in a desperate effort to help family back home.

Taste Of Chicago: Crowds, Crime Alike Apparently Down
July 5, 2011 at 1:40 PM

While this year's Taste of Chicago festival, the first managed by the city's Park District, lacked some of the chaos that peppered last year's event, revenue was also down for organizers and many vendors alike -- unless you were selling large hunks of meat or Eli's cheesecake, apparently.

In a Tuesday press release, Mayor Rahm Emanuel applauded the city's police force and Office of Emergency Management and Communications for how they handled the event, which reportedly resulted in almost 50 percent fewer arrests, 20 percent fewer citations for soliciting or panhandling and zero incidents involving illegal weapons, as NBC Chicago reported.

Sex, Drugs, Twitter -- and Anthony Weiner
July 5, 2011 at 1:34 PM

Huma Ubedin is beautiful and clever. She works for Hillary Clinton. She's married to a handsome politician. She's the kind of woman other women envy. Or would envy, if the handsome politician wasn't now world famous for his big, bulging crotch.

It's just over a month since a photo of an erect penis battling grey boxer shorts was posted on the Twitter account of New York Congressman Anthony Weiner. When the news, if you can call an erect penis news, exploded on to the Twittersphere, and then the blogosphere, and then into what another prominent American politician calls the "lamestream" media, Weiner seemed a bit confused. He couldn't, he said, after what sounded like hours of close inspection with giant computer screens and tape measures, say "with certitude" whether the erect penis was his.

Colin Firth, Scarlett Johansson Targeted For 'Trance' From Danny Boyle
July 5, 2011 at 1:31 PM

As it turns out, James McAvoy will star in "Slumdog Millionaire" director Danny Boyle's next film, "Trance," but it won't be in place of his "X-Men: First Class" co-star/rival Michael Fassbender. No, it looks like the honor of replacing Magneto may go to Oscar-winner Colin Firth.

According to TwitchFilm.com, due to scheduling conflicts, Fassbender has had to pull out of the British art-heist film about a would be thief who hits his head and gets amnesia. He seemed to be slated to play Aiden, a supporting role, but instead, Boyle wants Firth to take the job. Then, for the supporting role of Elizabeth, TwitchFilm reports that Boyle wants Johansson.

There were even reports last week of a 12-year-old Colorado boy who woke up crying because a moth had crawled into his ear. He had to go to the hospital emergency room, where doctors tried to drown the moth to kill it, to no avail. They ended up removing the insect with tweezers -- where it came out alive, 9News reported.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn Rape Charge May Be Dropped (VIDEO)
July 5, 2011 at 12:21 PM

Sexual assault charges against former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn could be dropped in the next few weeks, according to sources close to the case who question the accusers credibility.

Prosecutors say that the Sofitel hotel maid accusing him of rape lied repeatedly, including about being gang raped on her asylum application. Further inconsistencies were pointed out in her story, including that in her grand jury testimony she claimed she waited in the hallway after her attack, but she has since told investigators she cleaned a nearby room after the attack.

Is Turkish-Israeli Reconciliation Imminent?
July 5, 2011 at 12:19 PM

The fact that Israeli and Turkish officials have begun to renew dialogue at a time of significant uncertainty and turmoil in the broader Middle East is, of course, no coincidence. Israel and Turkey are rare anchors of stability in an increasingly volatile region. With the Arab Spring, Jerusalem and Ankara's shared strategic interests are becoming ever clearer, particularly with the ongoing unrest in neighboring Syria. These interests are serving to catapult both sides over the obstacles that have hindered their reconciliation since the incident aboard the Mavi Marmara on May 31, 2010. With renewed understanding of the benefits of their close cooperation and partnership, Israel-Turkey reconciliation today, should reason prevail, is imminent.

There has been a recent flurry of public signals between Israeli and Turkish officials. First, apparently under pressure from Turkish government officials, the IHH, the organizer of last year's Gaza-bound flotilla, announced that the Mavi Marmara ship would not be participating in an upcoming flotilla. Shortly thereafter, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent Turkish Prime Minister Tayyep Erdogan a congratulatory note for his re-election victory on June 12 stating, "My government will be happy to work with the new Turkish government on finding a resolution to all outstanding issues between our countries, in the hope of reestablishing our cooperation and renewing the spirit of friendship which has characterized the relations between our peoples for many generation." Reports then surfaced that Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Moshe Ya'alon has held private discussions with Turkish Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Feridun Sinirlioglu regarding a government-to-government reconciliation document. Most recently, Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon, who infamously humiliated Turkey's ambassador to Israel in front of reporters by placing him on a lower couch, told a group of Turkish reporters visiting Jerusalem that "I believe what we have lost over the past few years is trust. Now we need to let go of this mutual blame game as to why this trust was lost."

What Drives an Entrepreneur?
July 5, 2011 at 12:17 PM

If we're going to see a job recovery in this decade, it's likely to come from America's entrepreneurs since 60 to 80 percent of the net job growth in our economy comes from small to mid-size businesses. So, if we know our economic recovery depends on incubating more entrepreneurs, it's natural to ask, "How can we create more entrepreneurs and what drives an individual to relentlessly work eighty hours a week on a risky new venture?"

Conventional wisdom suggests the primary motivator for entrepreneurs is money or wealth creation and, in fact, much of the political debate tends to center around what kind of tax or regulatory policy changes will turn corporate suits into small business adventurers overnight. But, what drives someone to be an entrepreneur is a much more complex question and one that I've grappled with in the quarter century since I launched my company.

Paula Deen Cited For Chicken Possession
July 5, 2011 at 12:13 PM

Last week, The Huffington Post noted that Paula Deen's backyard hens faced eviction due to zoning violations. A new dispatch from the Savannah Morning News indicates that their expulsion may be moving forward. Deen was apparently cited for her chickens by Chatham County Building Safety and Regulatory Services for their violation of county zoning codes.

The citation came after similar action against neighbors of Deen's, Bill and Jan Lynes, who keep 22 chickens. The Lynes have said that they plan to contest the current zoning laws to keep their chickens. Deen's representatives have remained noncommittal in their response to the citation, saying that Deen will comply with whatever ruling county officials ultimately reach.

Billionaire Mayor Bloomberg Says, "Let Them Eat Geese"
July 5, 2011 at 12:10 PM

It's summer in the city, and that means weekends at the beach, walks in the park, and, for the third year in a row, the annual slaughter of Canada geese. Those same birds that add charm and atmosphere to our green spaces have become victims of their disorderly ways. They produce excrement, and every June they molt, another messy annoyance that also renders them temporarily flightless and easy to round up and make disappear.

Since eliminating a species at their most vulnerable because they are untidy is unacceptable to many constituents, it was necessary for Mayor Michael Bloomberg to put a different spin on why our public parks are being turned into wildlife killing fields. Last year the mayor's office said airline safety was the reason for exterminating the charismatic, waddling, 25-pound birds with stronger family values than most politicians (they mate for life), claiming that they were the villains responsible for mishap with US Airways flight 1549, aka "the miracle on the Hudson." But, when it was repeatedly pointed out that 1) those birds were migratory, and the ones in New York City parks, perfectly happy to stay at home, are not, and 2) if the bird/plane line of reasoning is followed, all large migratory birds, even American bald eagles, would have to be killed, the mayor's flacks had to come up with a different story.

The Economics of Poverty -- Thinking in Win-Win Terms
July 5, 2011 at 12:08 PM

Everyone seems to be playing the blame game this political season. Did Obama deliver the change in Washington he promised, ask both his supporters and opponents? Conservatives and progressives are unhappy with the slow-growing economy and jobless rate still hovering around 9 percent. And no one is quite sure who to blame -- Obama or GW Bush? Is it too much government, or too little?

But rather than play the blame game, why not think in Win-Win terms? Why not correct the causes of so much economic instability, which can lead us out of the swamp of debt that has resulted? There is a much deeper reason for the malaise, in other words. Most of us have not seen a rise in either real incomes or wealth since the 1970s. And this in turn has led to a deep-seated pessimism and loss of confidence in both private and public institutions.

The Spiritual Side of Bereavement
July 5, 2011 at 12:00 PM

For years, Toni and Mark prayed for a child. Well in their 40s, their "miracle child" was born. Handsome and smart, Anthony exceeded all his developmental milestones until he reached 18 months. Then, inexplicably, he seemed to regress. Toni and Mark found he has a progressive, genetic disease. Anthony died just before his third birthday. For Toni and Mark, the illness and death provoked a deep spiritual crisis. How could God let this happen? How could He grant their prayer only to later take the child they so deeply loved?

We often think of grief as an emotional reaction, one where individuals may experience a range of reactions such as anger, guilt, sadness, loneliness and yearning, to name but a few. Yet grief is more than that. It affects us physically, sometimes even compromising the health of survivors. It influences how we think and how we behave.

Playing Games
July 5, 2011 at 11:50 AM

The people don't realize that Washington is playing games. Once you get to Congress, you can stay there if you play the money game and don't make any mistakes. The money game is vicious. To be elected the seventh time to the United States Senate in 1998, it took $8.5 million. Eight and a half million factors out to raising $30,000 a week, each week, every week, for six years. It's not just raising money the year ahead of election, but all six years -- and all the time. We used to have a junior Senator read Washington's Farewell Address on February 22nd. But now we've merged Lincoln's Birthday with Washington's so that we can go to California to raise money. We have breaks each month for fundraising, the month of August off for fundraising, and fundraising morning, noon and night in the city of Washington. The name of the game is to get the money to get on TV and make no mistake when you come in from the fundraising. That's why nothing gets done.

As far as the President and Congress are concerned, paying for government is a mistake. That's why the President and Congress have been borrowing to pay for government for ten years. Getting out of wars is a mistake because it makes you appear weak on defense. That's why we continue in five wars: Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Libya and Yemen. Creating jobs in the U. S. is a mistake because it will turn off the contributors: Wall Street, the big banks, and multi-nationals who want to keep the off-shore profits flowing. That's why Congress gives a tax benefit to create jobs off-shore -- and refuses to repeal it.

Post-Reality Politics, Part One: Down the Rabbit Hole With the New GOP
July 5, 2011 at 11:38 AM

Some readers may be old enough to remember that affable confabulator-in-chief, Ronald Reagan, who notoriously conflated movie roles with real events, insisted that 80 percent of air pollution came from trees (30 years before California Republican Representative Dana Rohrabacher's similar assertion in May), and claimed that, "in the Russian language there isn't even a word for freedom." Nevertheless, he and his handlers were masters of media management. As the sign on the desk of his press secretary, Larry Speakes, famously read, "You don't tell us how to stage the news and we don't tell you how to cover it.'

Since Reagan's subsequent beatification by those have sought to rewrite the history of his administration, GOP politicians and political consultants have gone from adeptly putting a self-serving spin on events to making them up out of whole cloth. But this is not to say that the Republican Party is monolithic. There is a significant if dwindling plurality among GOP voters who despair over the loss of that now extinct species of conservative leader, the moderate Republican. The trait that most defines the majority of present day conservative politicians is their reflexive tendency to invent reality. But even among them there are important distinctions; some are delusional, while others are merely liars.

There Is No Poop Fairy: A Friendly Reminder From Colorado's Jefferson County Sheriff's Office
July 5, 2011 at 11:37 AM

Kudos to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department in Colorado for an ad-campaign that's likely to ... um ... linger. On the heels of a growing number of citizens' complaints, dog-owners in Jefferson County are being reminded that "there is no poop fairy."

A public service announcement makes clear,
"Like the Loch Ness Monster or Bigfoot, the fabled poop fairy has been the stuff of legend. Flying undetected in parks, neighborhoods and schoolyards, she was said to follow close behind dogs and their owners -- picking up what the dog left behind, before flying off to the next canine creation. A widespread belief that she existed seemed to reassure some that cleaning up after one's dog was sort of ... optional."

Beth Terry's Plastic-Free Gardening Adventure, Part 2 + Giveaway
July 5, 2011 at 10:14 AM

By guest blogger Beth Terry. For Part 1.

A few weeks ago, I began my plastic-free gardening project in my tiny Oakland, CA, yard with the help of Rodale.com and Eric Hurlock, of OrganicGardening.com. I built a raised bed with sustainable wood, and filled it with bulk gardening soil that I had delivered without any packaging. So far, so good. But buying plants and watering them has proven to be a little trickier, plastic-ally speaking.

PIRAEUS, Greece (AP) — A Greek court has released from custody the American captain of a boat participating in an international flotilla aiming to breach Israel's blockade of the Gaza strip.

John Klusmire, the captain of the Audacity of Hope, had attempted to set sail from a port near Piraeus last week in defiance of a Greek ban on the flotilla boats leaving port. Should Breastfeeding Be Allowed In Public?
July 5, 2011 at 9:59 AM

It's the question many are buzzing about, after last week a Detroit bus driver threatened to kick a nursing mother off the bus unless she covered up.

July 5, 2011 at 9:51 AM

Roving reporter Chris Unitt is what some might call a good sport. But we're willing to bet that after watching this video, more than a few of you will be calling him out of his mind.

As you'll see below, Unitt was given a live demonstration of one of circus act Cirque Eloize's thrilling stunts in Boston, only this act involved his head coming dangerously close to a bouncing bicycle. And did we mention the wheel also goes between his legs?

July 5, 2011 at 9:43 AM

GENEVA (AP) — Throngs of Somali children are dying because of the harrowing journey with their families to reach refugee camps in neighboring Kenya and Ethiopia, the U.N. refugee agency said Tuesday.

Some of the children don't survive the exhausting trek and aid workers are learning of those deaths from families who tell their stories once they arrive at one of the overcrowded border camps that now host more than 382,000 people, agency officials said.
