July 6, 2011 at 1:56 PM

When Stella D'Oro workers went on strike in 2008 protesting unfair wages, Emmy Award winning filmmakers Jon Alpert and Matthew O'Neill were right alongside them covering their story for a documentary.

Two years later, that story is coming to light, as No Contract, No Cookies premieres on HBO2 tonight.

The film covers the duration of the 11-month-long strike, from its joyous second act and all the way to the depressing epilogue.

Manhattan Man Found Guilty of Murder In Brutal 2007 Stabbing
July 6, 2011 at 1:56 PM

A 44-year-old drug dealer and addict with a long criminal record was found guilty of second-degree murder on Tuesday for the brutal stabbing death of his girlfriend in 2007.

During the trial, Juan Rios, of Manhattan, confessed on the stand that he had stabbed Denise Deperrie, 40, nearly two dozen times with a kitchen knife while high on methadone and Xanax. Yet his defense attorney pleaded for leniency, claiming Rios was mentally ill and suffered from extreme emotional disturbance at the time of the attack.

Rios testified that he killed Deperrie in a fit of jealous rage after she threatened to leave him. Her decomposing body was discovered in her SoHo apartment a week after the murder.

"Follow The Sun" Takes The Classic Intermission Reel To A Dark Place (VIDEO)
July 6, 2011 at 1:40 PM

Movie intermission and preview reels are as part of the movie-going experience as colossal popcorns and soda as tall as the kids. It's a pretty natural progression, then, that design studio MK12 took to the clips for inspiration for their latest short, and did it their own way.

In "Follow The Sun," we get up close and personal with the grotesque dancing snacks and beefy treats that lure us out of our velvet movie chairs - and then we watch them spiral into junk food hell and meet their doom. The resulting feature is one of both beautiful whimsy, and really creepy treats.

To make the nightmarish short, Kansas City based MK12 became experts in stop-motion animation and drive-in reels, calling on cel-frame animator TJ Fuller of Cal Arts for help. "Follow The Sun' premiered at the 10th annual FITC Design & Technology event in Toronto this year.

Daniel Craig Talks 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo,' Politics, Class In Esquire
July 6, 2011 at 1:40 PM

Daniel Craig is not a particularly fragile man, what with his mysterious eyes, ripped James Bond redefining the character and upcoming, rough and tumble western, "Cowboys and Aliens" epic ready to burst into theaters. But even he, this steely-gazed Brit, was taken aback when he was allowed into David Fincher's editing room.

Fincher, director of Craig's upcoming English-language adaptation of "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo," shocked his star with what he put on screen -- and what he didn't (no small task, considering both the racy content of the book, and the fact that Craig was there on set).

"It's as adult as you can possibly make it," Craig tells Esquire, the cover of which he graces this month. "This is adult drama. I grew up, as we f*cking all did, watching The Godfather and that, movies that were made for adults. And this is a $100 million R-rated movie. Nobody makes those anymore. And Fincher, he's not holding back. They've given him free rein. He showed me some scenes recently, and my hand was over my mouth, going, Are you f*cking serious?"

'Gas-Flushed' Sandwiches Stay 'Fresh' For Two Weeks
July 6, 2011 at 1:23 PM

Food technologist Ray Boggiano has spent nearly a year developing sandwiches that stay fresh, even when they are two weeks old. Boggiano uses a process called "gas-flushing" (mmm..tasty) that replaces oxygen with carbon dioxide and nitrogen in the protective packaging.

The choice of ingredients are a crucial part to the sandwiches' freshness. Foods that are highly perishable, such as lettuce, are not used. Likewise, oatmeal bread is used since it lasts longer than conventional bread.

Boggiano's sandwich varieties include chicken tikka, cheese ploughmans, tuna mayonnaise, ham and cheese, chicken and bacon, and cheese and onion. The sandwiches will be available at convenience stores and corner shops in the UK.

Google Exec Marissa Mayer Explains Why There Aren't More Girl Geeks
July 6, 2011 at 1:23 PM

In 1999, Marissa Mayer, then a recent Stanford University graduate, joined a little-known startup with fewer than 20 employees that she calculated as having a two percent chance of success: Google.

Now, as a senior executive with the search giant, Mayer is one of the most powerful women in Silicon Valley. Her work at Google influences how hundreds of millions of people access information on the web and she plays a key role in shaping Google’s most important products, from the look and feel of its homepage to popular features like Google News and Gmail, as well as its more recent forays into location-based services.

One of the most iconic women in tech today, Mayer’s career path offers lessons for how to attract more women to a male-dominated field and undermines the assumption that to foster more female techies, it’s early or never. Mayer, who calls herself a “proud geek,” did not grow up obsessed with computers -- she bought her first one in college -- or with dreams of becoming the next Bill Gates. She wanted to be a pediatric neurosurgeon.

Bill Clinton: Economy Should Recover Before Deficit-Cutting Deal Takes Effect
July 6, 2011 at 1:23 PM

WASHINGTON -- Former President Bill Clinton said Wednesday that any deficit-cutting deal worked out between Democrats and Republicans shouldn't take effect immediately, but rather wait until after the economy has recovered. He warned that implementing the cuts too soon could imperil the fragile economic recovery and possibly send the country spiraling back into a recession.

"Almost nobody's talking about one of the central points that everyone who has analyzed this situation makes -- including the bipartisan Simpson-Bowles commission -- which [is] you shouldn't do any of this until the economy is clearly recovering," said Clinton in remarks at the annual Campus Progress National Conference in Washington, D.C.

"If you do things that dampen economic growth…there's a good chance that economic activity will go down so much that tax revenues will be reduced even more than spending is cut and the deficit will increase," he added.

Cutting Salt Doesn't Lower Heart Disease, Death Risks: Study

In an analysis that set off a fierce debate over the health effects of salt, researchers said on Wednesday they had found no evidence that small cuts to salt intake reduce the risk of developing heart disease or dying prematurely.

In a systematic review published by The Cochrane Library, British scientists found that while cutting salt consumption did appear to lead to slight reductions in blood pressure, that was not translated into lower death or heart disease risk.

Spencer Green: Casey Anthony Jury to Solve Debt Ceiling Crisis in 11 Hours
July 6, 2011 at 12:54 PM

Jurors of the Casey Anthony trial have been flown to Washington, D.C. in the hope of harnessing their talents to solve the looming debt ceiling crisis. "If anyone can make a swift and unpopular decision about this economic problem, it's them," said Senator Morris Harveston. "We've tried everything else. There is no reasonable doubt in my mind that they will get the job done."

The 12 jurors and five alternate jurors were sequestered in an unknown hotel a few hours ago, after being briefed on all previous negotiations that involve raising the country's borrowing limit and potential spending cuts. "I am certain they will be able to bring the same dispassionate skills to reviewing all of the information as they did to the Casey Anthony trial," said Congressman Richard Noller. "And if it doesn't work? Big deal -- it's just 11 hours."

Following this, the jurors will broker a treaty between Israelis and the Palestinian Authority, then fix all of the nuclear reactors in Japan, and form a unified field theory. Commented Juror Number Two: "If you want something done, we'll do it in eleven hours... or the job is free!"

Mitchell Bard: Brooks Is Right: Democrats Have Caved to the GOP in Debt Ceiling Negotiations
July 6, 2011 at 12:38 PM

David Brooks's New York Times column on Monday created quite a stir, getting major play on cable television news and online (at least between Casey Anthony reports).

Most of the discussion turned on Brooks' assertion that

"the Republican Party may no longer be a normal party. Over the past few years, it has been infected by a faction that is more of a psychological protest than a practical, governing alternative."

The idea that the current Tea Party-dominated GOP is single-mindedly focused on its far-right ideology at the expense of what is best for the country is not news to anyone who has been paying attention for the last two-and-a-half years. I suppose the fact the statement came from Brooks, a conservative, is what caused the column to get so much attention.

Syria Army Deserter Claims He Was Ordered To Shoot Protesters (VIDEO)
July 6, 2011 at 12:38 PM

A man claiming to be a Syrian army deserter has come forward with claims that he defected after being repeatedly assigned to open fire on unarmed civilians protesting against the government.

As CNN is reporting, the 21-year-old man, who worked in an ice cream factory prior to being drafted last December, deserted and fled Syria after serving as a sniper in the 14th Division of the Syrian army. The man, who asked not to be identified, is currently in hiding in Istanbul while applying for asylum as a refugee.

Though CNN could not independently verify the man's claims, they seem to be in line with protester group allegations, as well as other defector's testimonies. "There were protests and chanting," he said. "Suddenly our officer gave us the order to shoot at the people. It didn't matter how many would be killed; the important thing was for the protest to be dispersed."

David Hasselhoff In 'Sons Of Anarchy': 'Baywatch' Star To Play Porn Star
July 6, 2011 at 12:38 PM

Once a massive primetime star thanks to his heroic talking car in "Knight Rider" and then camp hero thanks to buxom heroine lifeguards in "Baywatch," David Hasselhoff has, over time, made the career-elongating transition from legitimate draw to B-style television to straight up self-parody. Some might argue that his time patrolling the waves was, at least by the end, an exercise in self-awareness and winking all by itself, but regardless of the exact moment of meta changeover, The Hoff is now, undoubtedly, always The Hoff.

Following a rough end to his gimmicky presence on "America's Got Talent," Hasselhoff has now signed on to what sounds like a perfect bit of self-parody: according to TVGuide, Hasselhoff will be playing Dondo, a former porn star turned girl-on-girl skin flick director.

Whether the boys of Sam Crow will appreciate his presence in their Charming, California, is a whole other question, the answer to which will presumably hint at just how serious his time on the show's fourth season will be taken.

News Of The World Hacking Scandal: A Timeline Of Events
July 6, 2011 at 12:38 PM

British tabloid News of the World has come under intense fire for allegedly hacking into the voice mailbox of a missing 13-year old girl in 2002, as well as families of the victims in London's 7/7 bombings in 2005.

The developments are just the latest revelations in a long-running phone hacking scandal at NoW. In 2007, then-royal editor Clive Goodman and private investigator Glenn Mulcaire were charged with hacking the voice messages of three aides to the royal family. But while News Corp. executives and former NoW editors Andy Coulson and Rebekah Brooks have always maintained that the two convicted journalists acted alone to no one else's knowledge, the new allegations suggest otherwise.

Prime Minister David Cameron has promised to a full investigation into the "absolutely disgusting" allegations, and the original 2007 police investigation that discovered but failed to act on bountiful evidence of NoW's phone hacking practices. Other celebrities and politicians targeted by the tabloid in recent years include Jude Law, Sienna Miller, Gwyneth Paltrow, London Mayor Boris Johnson and members of Parliament. See the full timeline of events below.

Colorectal Cancer: 1 In 3 Skipping Lifesaving Screenings
July 6, 2011 at 12:26 PM

One in three adults isn't getting screened for colorectal cancer when they should be, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

While the total number of people being screened for colorectal cancer in the United States has increased over the last eight years -- from 52 percent in 2002 to 65 percent in 2010 -- screening rates are still too low among people ages 50 and 75, the Vital Signs report said.

Half of new detected cancer cases -- as well as prevented deaths -- are a result of increased colorectal cancer screenings, according to the report. From 2003 to 2007, 66,000 fewer people developed the disease, and 32,000 fewer people died from it.
