Playing Games at Work: A Look at 5 Video Games with Corporate Settings
July 6, 2011 at 1:59 PM

I work at a company that develops mobile apps and other digital content. We recently released an iPhone game called "Office Riot," and, as the name suggests, it has a workplace theme. Compared with the number of games that take place on spaceships or in military outposts, there are very few action-oriented games that take place in businesses. Yes, on paper, office work doesn't sound as exciting as shooting zombies, but in practice, the following five games with corporate settings still prove that there's plenty of fun to be had by playing games at work.

The bill now goes to Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown, who has not indicated whether he will sign the document, the Associated Press Reports. The regulation would also prohibit the use of any materials that reflects negatively on gays.

U.S. Senator Mark Udall sent a letter to the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) urging immediate action to help three of Colorado's largest sawmills which are struggling financially.

Udall is requesting that the USFS and USDA work with the sawmills to modify some contract terms so the mills can remain open. Social Security Cuts On The Table In Debt Ceiling Negotiations
July 6, 2011 at 1:45 PM

Last week, President Barack Obama insisted that nothing could be off limits in talks to raise the nation's debt ceiling.

The president was mostly referring to tax increases on the wealthy, which Democrats have been pushing for in the deficit talks, and which Republicans have steadfastly opposed. But it now appears Social Security could be under the knife, according to Talking Points Memo.

A Million Questions that Need to be Asked of Our Aging Parents
July 6, 2011 at 1:44 PM

How do you deal with elderly parents who are not living near you? What happens when their health begins to fail? How do you know that they are doing okay?

We are taught from when we are very young to "respect" our elders ... but what if what they want is not what you think is the best for them? What if what I think might be "best" for my parent, is not something with which my parent agrees? "Best" is a relative term (no pun intended), so, where does the middle ground come in? One of the Ten Commandments is to "obey" our parents. Well, what happens when we think that it is not in their best interest to continue living where they are living or we feel it is unsafe, and they disagree with us?

Constitutional Conservatism Ready for Prime Time
July 6, 2011 at 1:42 PM

Liberal pundits are panicking over constitutional conservatism. They shouldn't, because every child -- whether the parents are liberal or conservative -- will benefit from constitutional conservatism's ascendency. If America elects a constitutional conservative president and Congress in 2012, we'll move forward as a freedom-loving nation.

Several outlets on the Left -- such as The New Republic -- are raising an alarm about this disturbing new term, saying that it's secret code for "absolutists" and "zealots" on economic issues, overturning Roe v. Wade, and implying that constitutional conservatives are segregationists bent on creating a theocracy.

Let's Get Serious
July 6, 2011 at 11:56 AM

Observing last night's Givenchy presentation at Hotel d'Evreux in the Place Vendome, I was reminded how seriously people take fashion. Watching inquisitive editors take diligent notes and detailed photos of each intricate cream, gold, and white gown, knit, and blouse accessibly displayed on forms that could be touched by prying and curious hands brought this still life presentation completely to life.

I have been a huge fan of Ricardo Tisci's work at Givenchy. His first Couture shows mystified me, but I came around to his gothic Couture. His men's and women's ready to wear is both a commercial and critical success, but it is his Couture where his poetry and artistry is elevated to spectacular heights. What is marvelous about these intimate presentations is the ability to see all the work that goes into each creation -- be it tiny seed pearls hand-applied to the lightest chiffons or a dramatic gold evening bag with metal fringe long enough to graze the floor, if you are really cool and really rich, this is your wardrobe. I don't know exactly where one wears most of these clothes as the are ultra sheer and ultra precious, but a bride with bucks and an apartment overlooking the Vendome Column could probably justify this wardrobe. If the Hotel d'Evreux is available, buy the apartment and the spectacular clothing currently hanging in it.

Seven Critical Life Lessons From Toddlers & Tiaras
July 6, 2011 at 11:53 AM

Some see the show as exploitation of little girls, while others see it as an exposé of moms seeking validation through the beauty of their children. I, on the other hand, see Toddlers & Tiaras for what it is surely meant to be: Life Lessons. Seven in fact. Here goes:

  1. Sparkle. Inner beauty is inconsequential if you have enough glittery objects on the outside. There is no such thing as "overdone." So get a spray-tan on "dark," add as many hair extensions as your scalp will allow, insert false teeth even if you're not yet potty-trained, and sparkle until it hurts. If you forget to sparkle, some well-placed yelling by a third-party can put you back in overdrive. Be sure to wear a name tag, though, so friends and family will recognize you.

Jon Andre Fredriksen, Norwegian Soccer Player, Scores Amazing Goal From Midfield (VIDEO)
July 6, 2011 at 11:51 AM

When it comes to amazing soccer goals, some are scored due to pure luck and circumstance, while others are rooted in great skill and athleticism. And then some are a little bit of both; as shown by the tally above.

During a recent Norwegian Second Division match between Stabæk 2 and Moss, Moss midfielder Jon Andre Fredriksen collected the ball near midfield, just barely on his side of the pitch. Having apparently noticed that the Stabæk goalkeeper was cheating forward off his line a bit too greedily, Fredriksen decided to take his chances and loft a very long and very high arcing shot towards the opposition's net. Fredriksen's amibitious attempt struck gold, and led to a rare midfield goal celebration (most players run to one of the corner flags after scoring).

Going 'Inside Scientology'
July 6, 2011 at 11:33 AM

When most of us think of Scientology, we think of Tom Cruise and John Travolta. Not Janet Reitman, a Rolling Stone journalist who wrote a National Magazine Award-nominated investigation of the Church of Scientology in 2006.

She's spent the last six years digging into this unusual faith, and her new book, "Inside Scientology," reveals much about this unknown world. She interviewed more than 50 people involved with Scientology, almost all of them on the record, and everything triple fact-checked. I was curious how she won the trust of this famously secretive organization, and what she found on the inside.

Subway, Wendy's Plan Major Expansions In Chinese Market
July 6, 2011 at 11:26 AM

In the past month, both Subway and Wendy's have announced plans to open new fast food outposts in China. Representatives from Subway told the AFP that they hope to have opened "well over 600" stores in the People's Republic by 2015. This is almost triple the number—220—they have today. Wendy's, which announced the dissolution of its three-year partnership with Arby's today, has just begun opening outposts in emerging Eurasian markets. It launched a Russian venture in June. Wendy's representatives said that the chain plans to move into Brazil and China shortly.

Chinese food spending is expected to grow about 80% by 2015. Though American fast food sales have remained strong throughout the recession, experts have pointed to emerging markets as the central source for future revenue in the sector. The strongest force in the Chinese fast food market today is YUM! Foods, which owns KFC and Pizza Hut, among others.

There's an additional $118.6 billion for overseas contingency operations -- a $39 billion drop, reflecting the expected drawdown in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Twitter Bullying: Arguing On Political Opinion Now Counts?
July 6, 2011 at 11:21 AM

When I get an article with the headline, "White House uses Twitter to bully critics," it sort of primes me to expect to see some examples of some hardcore online bullying. But in the case of White House Director of Progressive Media and Online Response Jesse Lee, as reported by The Daily Caller, this is about as good as it gets:

Of the 267 tweets written by Lee in just over a month, a stunning 40 of them have been directed at Kevin Eder, a prolific Twitter user with more than 83,000 tweets to his credit. That means 15 percent of Lee's tweets — from an official White House account no less — have been with Eder.

Remember the Most Vulnerable in the Deficit Battles
July 6, 2011 at 11:04 AM

If the economy is showing tepid signs of recovery, we're seeing no indication at the hundreds of food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters we serve daily. Across the country and throughout Chicago and Cook County, record numbers of men, women and children are still in need of emergency food assistance -- many for the first time.

A few weeks ago, David, a single father of two in his 30s, walked into a community center in South Suburban Harvey. He needed food to feed his young children because his work hours had recently been cut. He'd seen a flyer about an assistance program, but didn't know what to expect. From a Greater Chicago Food Depository outreach worker at the center, David learned of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly the Food Stamp Program), and that he might be eligible for help. He also learned that there was a fresh source of wholesome food close to his home at a nearby stop of the Food Depository's pantry on wheels, the Producemobile. For David, the social safety net worked beautifully, as it should.

Don't Go Away Mad, Just Go Away: The Supreme Court Closes Up Shop
July 6, 2011 at 10:52 AM

The U.S. Supreme Court ended its term this week and now starts a three-month vacation. If the Court's members follow past practices, Justice Thomas will head out in his motor home in search of NASCAR race venues. Justice Scalia will spend the summer racking up speaking fees at Federalist Society conferences or in a duck blind with Dick Cheney.

Judging from some of the cases decided by the Court during its past eight-month term, the conservative bloc of five Republican appointees appear to want more time for vacationing. Those five justices seem intent on America's courts taking it down a notch and kicking back more.

David Hasselhoff In 'Sons Of Anarchy': 'Baywatch' Star To Play Porn Star
July 6, 2011 at 9:49 AM

Once a massive primetime star thanks to his heroic talking car in "Knight Rider" and then camp hero thanks to buxom heroine lifeguards in "Baywatch," David Hasselhoff has, over time, made the career-elongating transition from legitimate draw to B-style television to straight up self-parody. Some might argue that his time patrolling the waves was, at least by the end, an exercise in self-awareness and winking all by itself, but regardless of the exact moment of meta changeover, The Hoff is now, undoubtedly, always The Hoff.

Following a rough end to his gimmicky presence on "America's Got Talent," Hasselhoff has now signed on to what sounds like a perfect bit of self-parody: according to TVGuide, Hasselhoff will be playing Dondo, a former porn star turned girl-on-girl skin flick director.

News Corp: A Good Empire
July 6, 2011 at 9:44 AM

After News Corp-owned News of the World is heavily criticized and accused of illegal activity, Jeremy Hunt is expected to approve News Corporation owning all shares in BSkyB this Friday, in a move which the BBC business editor says will "generate revenues that would dwarf all rivals, even the BBC". Obviously, this should make any sane person very happy.

I actually quite like empires. Sure, sometimes they become bureaucratic -- the Death Star out of Star Wars, which was essentially just one big laser canon, seemed to have a lot of redundant office space for what it was. And yeah, they might tend towards evil sometimes -- like, say, the Evil Empire out of Star Wars. But if Star Wars has taught me anything (and everything I know about empires I learned from Star Wars, so clearly it did), it's that empires always prevail (nb I have only seen up to The Empire Strikes Back, NO spoilers please). That's why I'm over the moon about that the Culture Secretary is about to make News Corporation an even more colossal media empire than it already was (it owns a third of the British newspaper market), despite heavy criticism leveled at News Corp-owned News of the World this week by the liberal media, who resorted to "facts" and "basic decency" in order to ruin this paper's good name.
