Chinese And Non-Western Languages "Critical" For Competitive Students
July 5, 2011 at 12:39 PM

Mandarin teacher Li Wang sat in a chair small enough for a 4-year-old, her enthusiastic students sitting on the classroom carpet in a separate square. She placed a picture of a chicken on the board, pointed, and asked:

In unison, the prekindergarten class answered: "Ji!'' (Chicken!)

Such classes have usually been taught in suburban classrooms and prep schools. But this is no suburb: It's a Hyde Park charter school, where most students are black or Latino, and many from low-income homes. They have yet to perfect English, let alone Chinese.

Jennifer Aniston's Topless 'Horrible Bosses' Scene: Is It Real?
July 5, 2011 at 12:23 PM

When you're playing a supporting character in a film with three of the day's funniest actors, two Oscar-winning stars and another one of Hollywood's go-to leading men, and a scene of yours that may or may not even exist is drawing the most anticipation and driving the marketing campaign, well, that's superstardom.

And that's Jennifer Aniston.

America's Sweetheart changes it up in the upcoming R-rated comedy, "Horrible Bosses," going bad and playing a sex-crazed dentist bent on destroying the life of Charlie Day -- or at least his marriage. The film stars Day, Jason Sudeikis and Jason Bateman as put-upon employees out to kill their bosses -- Aniston, Kevin Spacey and Colin Farrell -- with the help of Jamie Foxx. A lot of star power there, but still, any number of marketing materials has emphasized the new Aniston, including racy red-band trailers that feature her in lingerie and still images that tease her brown-haired evil side.

Paula Deen Cited For Chicken Possession
July 5, 2011 at 12:23 PM

Last week, The Huffington Post noted that Paula Deen's backyard hens faced eviction due to zoning violations. A new dispatch from the Savannah Morning News indicates that their expulsion may be moving forward. Deen was apparently cited for her chickens by Chatham County Building Safety and Regulatory Services for their violation of county zoning codes.

The citation came after similar action against neighbors of Deen's, Bill and Jan Lynes, who keep 22 chickens. The Lynes have said that they plan to contest the current zoning laws to keep their chickens. Deen's representatives have remained noncommittal in their response to the citation, saying that Deen will comply with whatever ruling county officials ultimately reach.

North Korea Blamed For Cyberattack On U.S., South Korea: Report
July 5, 2011 at 11:51 AM

WASHINGTON -- North Korea or its sympathizers were responsible for the cyberattack against South Korean government and banking websites earlier this year, according to a new analysis that said it also appears to have been linked to the 2009 massive computer-based attack that brought down U.S. government Internet sites.

A study by computer security software maker McAfee Inc. concludes that the attack that targeted more than two dozen sites in South Korea was a type of reconnaissance mission to see how quickly South Korea's government detected the problem and recovered from it. The McAfee report, expected to be released Tuesday, said clues in the code suggest that the attack was probably engineered by North Korea or its sympathizers.

Greek Default Needed To Lure Long-Term Investors Back To Greece

LONDON (Marius Zaharia) - Long-term investors standing aloof from the Greek debt crisis want holders of its government bonds to take a loss big enough to slash the country's debt to sustainable levels before they consider returning.

Greece is still expected to default at some point and for most investors who have dumped bonds over the past two years and who are crucial to put the ailing economy back on its feet, the longer that is delayed, the longer it will be before they consider looking at Greek assets again.

'Party In The CIA': Weird Al Parodies Miley Cyrus (VIDEO)
July 5, 2011 at 11:51 AM

Since the early 1980s, each of "Weird Al" Yankovic's albums have served as pop music time capsules, and his newest release "Alpocalypse" is no exception. His Lady Gaga spoof "Perform This Way" may have received the most attention, but the album also includes parodies of Taylor Swift ("TMZ"), B.o.B. ("Another Tattoo") and representing the Disney Channel crowd, Miley Cyrus.

Weird Al's Cyrus parody, "Party in the CIA," adapts the ubiquitous hit "Party in the U.S.A." that introduced Cyrus to millions who don't regularly watch "Hannah Montana." But instead of singing about clubbing in Los Angeles, Yankovic transforms the song into an ode to clandestine operations. Sample lyrics: "We got our black ops all over the world, from Kazakhstan to Bombay / Payin' the bribes like yeah / pluggin' the leaks like yeah..."

This isn't the first time Yankovic has parodied a member of the Cyrus family -- he spoofed her dad Billy Ray's omnipresent hit "Achy Breaky Heart" in 1994 with "Achy Breaky Song."

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Heart disease can sneak up on women in ways that standard cardiac tests can miss.

It's part of a puzzling gender gap: Women tend to have different heart attack symptoms than men. They're more likely to die in the year after a first heart attack.

In fact, more than 40 percent of women still don't realize that heart disease is the No. 1 female killer. One in 30 women's deaths in 2007 was from breast cancer, compared to about 1 in 3 from cardiovascular disease, according to the American Heart Association.

A bomb-awareness team was shocked to find that an elementary school in Uganda was using an unexploded bomb as a school bell when the team arrived to teach students about the dangers of unexploded mines and how to identify bombs.

Worse, the bomb was still active -- at a school of about 700 students. Wilson Bwambale, coordinator of the Anti-Mine Network Rwenzori, told the Daily Monitor:

"Its head was still active, which means that if it is hit by a stronger force, it would explode instantly and cause untold destruction in the area."

WASHINGTON -- Two Democratic senators and one Republican senator are calling for the removal of all regular combat troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2012, a timetable that is significantly shorter than the one President Obama recently announced.

"We commend the president for sticking to the July date he had outlined for beginning the withdrawal. However, his plan would not remove all regular combat troops until 2014," Sens. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and Tom Udall (D-N.M.) wrote in a Tuesday op-ed in The New York Times.

"We believe the United States is capable of achieving this goal by the end of 2012. America would be more secure and stronger economically if we recognized that we have largely achieved our objectives in Afghanistan and moved aggressively to bring our troops and tax dollars home," the senators continued.

There are few things guaranteed in the upside down, always changing world of Hollywood, but here's one thing you can bank on: a successful film, if at all possible, will get a sequel.

A big opening weekend got the speculation started, but having just passed "Sex and the City" as the highest grossing R-rated female-driven comedy of all time, there's little doubt that Universal will be hungry for another helping of the Kristen Wiig-starring, Paul Feig-directed and Judd Apatow-produced laugh factory (with names like those, was there any doubt it'd be a hit?).

LAUREL, Mont. -- The initial cleanup along the oil-fouled Yellowstone River could be tested Tuesday as rising waters make it harder for Exxon Mobil Corp. to get to areas damaged by the crude spilled from a company pipeline.

President Gary Pruessing promised to do "whatever is necessary" to mop up oil spilled from the duct at the river bottom. That pledge included sending crews to walk the river banks in search of pooled oil once the flooding river recedes.

Larry Dominick, Cicero Town President, Slurred Latinos, Illegally Fired Workers: Lawsuit

Merced Rojas, once a handyman on the payroll of the town of Cicero, Illinois, is suing the town's president Larry Dominick for illegally firing him from his post because of his race, and his wife's occupation.

In the lawsuit, Rojas alleges that Dominick described Latinos as "spics," "wetbacks" and "illegal f***ing immigrants," according to the Chicago Sun-Times. That's a particularly volatile claim in Cicero, an overwhelmingly Latino suburb of Chicago.

The president's lawyer, Craig Tobin, argues that there are no "credible" witnesses who will testify that Dominick made the remarks. Dominick's wife is Latina, Tobin notes, arguing that the president would never use such language.

This was written by Carol Corbett Burris, the principal of South Side High School in New York. She was named the 2010 New York State Outstanding Educator by the School Administrators Association of New York State. The full letter can be read at The Washington Post

Dear Mr. Duncan:

You have never been to my high school, but if you visited, you would be impressed. It is an integrated suburban public high school that meets AYP each year for all groups of children. We are on all of the top 100 lists -- U.S. News & World Report, Newsweek and The Washington Post. Over 80% of our students graduate having passed the state exam in Algebra 2/Trigonometry and over 60% graduate with AP Calculus under their belt. We do a good job by the students we serve, some of whom have difficult life circumstances. I doubt that you will ever visit -- we are not a KIPP or other charter school likely to attract your attention. I think you should know, though, something about the teachers who work with me.

The 9 Most Controversial Apps Censored By Apple
July 5, 2011 at 10:10 AM

Apple's strict approval process for apps can be a tough hurdle to clear for some developers. But with over 425,000 iPhone applications available in the App Store, a few are bound to offend some customers.

Apple specifies in its Software Development Kit (SDK) that "Applications must not contain any obscene, pornographic, offensive or defamatory content or materials of any kind (text, graphics, images, photographs, etc.), or other content or materials that in Apple's reasonable judgment may be found objectionable by iPhone or iPod touch users." (PDF)

Despite these guidelines, some developers submit potentially offensive apps that inexplicably escape Apple's censors. Other developers walk the gray line of "reasonable judgement." Meanwhile, Apple's approval guidlines protect the company from the inevitable outcry that occurs when an app that promotes a controversial issue finds its way into the App Store. Nonetheless, when a company has a consumer-base as expansive and diverse as Apple's, it becomes increasingly difficult to keep every user happy by filtering offensive content. Sometimes Apple needs to rely on its users to report these controversial apps in order to bring it to their attention.
